Choosing Reality - 1149 Words

What we as a society watch on television really depends on the choices we make. George F. Will writes in his article â€Å"Reality Television: Oxymoron† of an increasingly infantilized society, whose moral philosophy is reducible to the celebration of â€Å"choice†, where adults are decreasingly distinguishable from children in their absorption in entertainments. This is a society in which â€Å"choice† exceeds all others and competition improves things. This society is built upon choice in every aspect of life and choice determines the way of life. For what they are watching is a representation of their choice. I do agree with George Will that reality television is becoming much more violent and sexual but what it really comes down to is the viewer’s†¦show more content†¦His analogies help to paint a picture and visualize what his argument is about. You are able to feel a good amount of poise or confidence in his writing. Will uses examples and m entions programs like Fear Factor, MTV’s Jackass, and even the NFL to relate his argument to something that we as the readers are somewhat familiar with. In Dana Steven’s article â€Å"Thinking Outside the Idiot Box† she writes, â€Å"shouldn’t grown men and women be trusted to judge their own dosages, just as they would decide on the number of drinks they can handle at the bar? And shouldn’t we choose our favorite shows because we like them, not because they force our otherwise helpless cortexes to ‘manag[e] resources’ and ‘recognize long-term patterns’?† (Stevens 234). Of course, because whether our society feels reality television will make us smarter or not, it really doesn’t make a difference. We have a freedom of choice and if reality TV is what people like to watch then who will stop them. Men and women should and do have a choice to decide what they really want to watch and this is why television has become more explicit. We as a society are deciding what is acceptable to be shown on television and TV is a reflection of what the world is really like. If no one watched this so called, â€Å"perversity programming† then the ratings would rapidly decline and it would cease to exist and yet it is still being shown like never before. Limbo Evaluation Essay The ranges of techniques that are used within a poem are essential because it gives the poem a whole new level. Within this poem Edward Kamau Brathwaite uses repetition a lot. For example he repeats the adjectives dark deck on lines 16 and 14 to give feelings of imprisonment. He repeats these two words because while aboard the ship all the slaves are able to see is the dark deck that is surrounding them. He uses the word dark throughout the poem, he uses it to describe the night (line 7), the deck (line 16, 17, 21 23), the ground (line 33) and when they are coming out of the dark (line 40). In most cases using the same adjective over and over again can become a little boring but in this case it just gives the poem more structure and rhythm. Ambiguity is used first in the poem as the title Limbo has 3 different meanings: the dance which on the slave ship was a way of keeping fit but on the other hand it was extremely uncomfortable as shown on line 28 of the poem when it says knees spread wide this suggest a very vulnerable and submissive position. Its a place for lost and neglected things and also the Roman Catholics believed it was the place for unbaptized but innocent or righteous souls such as infants and virtuous individuals. The line limbo like me can be ambiguous as it could almost mean the slave is begging the stick to favour him and get him under it, the slaves are stuck, unable to get freedom and it could mean limbo like I am doing. The one word line that uses the word down is also ambiguous as it can mean the movement of the slave under the pole, bending further down to get underneath the pole but also the feelings that are going through the slaved mind because they would be feeling more and more glum. However the word up does the opposite, it shows the movement of the slave rising up in the dance as though they have finished the dance and made it right to the bottom also as they are rising up their sprits are also rising feeling a sudden amount of relief come across them. When Alliteration is uses it gives the effect to draw attention to increase the feelings of imprisonment and it echoes the drum beat of the limbo dance. Alliteration is also uses to draw attention to increase feeling or foreboding. Also within the poem there is Consonance, this is evident in dark deck both words end in the same letter and this creates a clicking noise which gives the deck more emphasis on how poor the conditions are. The limbo stick is in front of me (line 7) and down down down (lines 34 36) and out of the dark and the dumb gods are raising me (lines 40 and 41). This relates to what the slaves would see, for example in front of me they would only see the ship in front of them after that they them would travel down down down into the hull of the ship and then at the end of the journey they are brought back up to the outside of the ship so the out of the dark section comes in. The poem Limbo relates to Brathwaites ideas and feeling about the culture and tradition by using many different techniques to emphasise the feelings of despair and vulnerability. Limbo suggest Brathwaites feelings on the culture were that they were quite passive and meek as they stood back and let the white people take them and take their families away from them. In slave time the tradition was that coloured people were less important than the white people and this is pointed out in the poems because he refers to the white slave drivers as dumb gods this gives them no respect as he uses the word dumb. It is also found that the satisfaction level of the customers about the quality of discount products mainly depends upon three dimensions reliability, perceived quality, and performance (Chen Hu, 2013). By testing the hypothesis, we also able to find that - the variables of customer quality i.e. Features, Aesthetics, and Perceived quality have a positive influence on Customer Loyalty. Discussion of hypothesis By discussing the hypothesis we can able to find many factors which influence the customer loyalty positively on a particular product. In hypothesis 1, it contains a table through which we can able to understand the coefficients of product quality on the customer loyalty. In this hypothesis, it also shows a table which refers correlation matrix for the variables of customer quality with customer loyalty (Beneke et al., 2013). To investigate the influence of product quality on customer loyalty regression analysis is done. Hypothesis 2 also consists of a table which shows the coefficients of the regression analysis between price and customer loyalty. In another table, the model summary has been made, by the help of which the coefficient of price on customer loyalty can be measured. In hypothesis 3, it shows the positive influence of quality belief of a product on the customer loyalty. The table in hypothesis 3 shows the coefficients between quality belief and customer loyalty. From thi s table, we can able to measure the value of the coefficient of quality belief (Severi Ling, 2013). In hypothesis 4, it shows that the product price has a positive influence on the product quality. The table in hypothesis 4 shows the coefficients of price on product quality. By the help of this table, we can able to measure the value of the coefficient of the price. Hypothesis 5 consists of three tables. The first table shows the model summary for customer loyalty based on product quality. By the help of this table we can able to predict the value of customer loyalty with the variable product quality, from the second table we can able to predict the value of customer loyalty with the variables product quality and brand and in the third table i.e. ANNOVA table it shows the regression based on the dependent variable customer loyalty and independent variables product quality and brand. In hypothesis 6 the first table shows the coefficient of the regression analysis of perceived qualit y on quality belief and the second table shows that both the variables are strongly correlated. Explanation of the Tests done for hypothesis In this hypothesis 1, Almarai analyzes the factors which influence the variables of customer loyalty like Features, Aesthetics, and Perceived quality. This mainly shows the correlation between the variables of the customer loyalty (Kuo et al., 2013). The output of this analysis is considered as product quality. In this hypothesis 2, the coefficients of the regression analysis between price and customer loyalty can be measured. The output of this analysis is statistically significant. In this hypothesis 3, the researchers can able to determine the quality belief. By the help of this hypothesis, the positive influence on the customer loyalty can be determined (Yoon et al., 2013). In this hypothesis, the coefficient of quality belief can be measured. In hypothesis 4, it shows that the product price has a positive influence on the product quality. Organizations have to critically evaluate all strategic alternatives by using SWOT analysis to achieve its major goals and targets. In other words, Haier practices SWOT as to build on strengths so as to utilize opportunities and counteract threats, and at the same time correct its weakness. Haier has strong technology strength, they are broadly well known by leading nine products in its domestic markets share and also the top three white goods brand in terms of three products (refrigerator, air-conditioner and washing machine) in global market. They are also a world-class group in the fields of household appliances, network appliances, digital and large range integrated circuits and new equipments. Beside that, Haier also has a long term fundamental drive, which is innovation force that applies in its producing and management. As a result, their innovation in providing after-sales service has brings significance response from its customers. My Diary October 11, 1950 I found the diary of my girlhood journey and new life in America yesterday. I feel that the story and lesson I learned from it are priceless and should be told; therefore I am publishing this collection of deep innermost thoughts from my youth for you to read and enjoy. It is my hope that you can look at your life and realize all the things there are to be thankful for. It seems like just yesterday I was first coming to America. I can still clearly feel the wonder and astonishment that rushed through my body that day at the sight of America. The tall buildings aligned with the horizon welcomed me to my new home. All I could manage to utter was, "There it is! This is it." My mouth gaped open in amazement and a chilly wind whipped through my hair as I set eyes upon the beginning of the rest of my life. There it stood beckoning to me, Ellis Island. It was my first stop in America. I heard all about America from my father, who had already visited once. He told me of the different clothing styles, big cities, bigger buildings, free education, and unusual foods. Soon I would experience all this on my own. My parents' decision to bring my sister and I to America back in 1899 was based upon bettering our lives and pure adventure. We had everything in Germany, but back then everyone wanted to be American. My sister and I could receive free education here. There wasn't much education available in Germany at the time, and what there was cost a great deal. In America education was free. October 18, 1900 My first stop in America was at a place called Ellis Island. All of the immigrants have to stop there first before being considered a real American. While there, I saw no two people that looked a like. Everyone spoke different languages. It was hard to communicate with some people. Luckily, my sister, Emily, and I speak some English, and we'll learn even more once we start school. After the brief registration at Ellis Island, Dad took us straight to our new dwelling. I was hoping it would be spacious and clean, just like our old house, but it wasn't. It wasn't a house like I was used to, but what they call tenement housing. It's a small apartment, with only two rooms. I don't even get my own bedroom. ... ...ted the furniture shop from Dad, and it's still open today. My parents were very happy at the success of their two children. I completed school, married, and later became a writer. Emily also completed school and married. She became an English teacher. Emily died at the tender age of 24 during childbirth. I miss my family dearly. Looking back on those months of my life when we first arrived in America, I only now realize how much I learned. I can now see how selfish and inconsiderate I was to my family. I was self-centered, but I didn't realize it at the time. Dad was having problems supporting his family, but I was worried about not having a new dress or toy. Both of my parents made the best life possible for Emily and I with what little they had. They sacrificed the certain life they once knew in Germany to come to an unknown country with no idea what the future would hold for them, just so my sister and I could better our lives. I didn't learn this lesson until I went to school and experienced my own struggles. I realized how hard it is to survive and support myself let alone a family. I can never show enough appreciation to my parents for what they did for Emily and I.

Glossary of Science Terms Central Limit Theorem: states that with a large enough sample, the sample mean will be normally distributed. A normally distributed sample mean is necessary to apply the t test, so if you are planning to perform a statistical analysis of experimental data, its important to have a sufficiently large sample. Conclusion: determination of whether the hypothesis should be accepted or rejected. Control Group: test subjects randomly assigned to not receive the experimental treatment. Control Variable: any variable that does not change during an experiment. Also known as constant variable Data:  (singular: datum) facts, numbers, or values obtained in an experiment. Dependent Variable: the variable that responds to the independent variable. The dependent variable is the one being measured in the experiment. Also known as the dependent measure, responding variable double-blind: neither the researcher nor the subject knows whether the subject is receiving the treatment or a placebo. Blinding helps reduce biased results. Empty Control Group: a type of control group which does not receive any treatment, including a placebo. Experimental Group: test subjects randomly assigned to receive the experimental treatment. Extraneous Variable: extra variables (not the independent, dependent, or control variable) that may influence an experiment, but are not accounted for or measured or are beyond control. Examples may include factors you consider unimportant at the time of  an experiment, such as the manufacturer of the glassware in a reaction or the color of paper used to make a paper airplane. Hypothesis: a prediction of whether the independent variable will have an effect on the dependent variable or a prediction of the nature of the effect.   Independence  or  Independently:  means one factor does not exert influence on another. For example, what one study participant does should not influence what another participant does. They make decisions independently. Independence is critical for a meaningful statistical analysis. Independent Random Assignment: randomly selecting whether a test subject will be in a treatment or control group. Independent Variable: the variable that is manipulated or changed by the researcher. Independent Variable Levels: refers to changing the independent variable from one value to another (e.g., different drug doses, different amounts of time). The different values are called levels. Inferential Statistics: applying statistics (math) to infer characteristics of a population based on a representative sample from the population. Internal Validity: an experiment is said to have internal validity if it can accurately determine whether the independent variable produces an effect. Mean: the average calculated by adding up all the scores and then dividing by the number of scores.   Null Hypothesis: the no difference or no effect hypothesis, which predicts the treatment will not have an effect on the subject. The null hypothesis is useful because it is easier to assess with a statistical analysis than other forms of a hypothesis. Null Results (Nonsignificant Results): results that do not disprove the null hypothesis. Null results dont prove the null hypothesis, because the results may have resulted from a lack of power. Some null results are type 2 errors. p 0.05: This is an indication of how often chance alone could account for the effect of the experimental treatment. A value p 0.05 means that 5 times out of a hundred, you could expect this difference between the two groups, purely by chance. Since the chance of the effect occurring by chance is so small, the researcher may conclude the experimental treatment did indeed have an effect. Note other p or probability values are possible. The 0.05 or 5% limit simply is a common benchmark of statistical significance. Placebo (Placebo Treatment):  a  fake treatment that should have no effect, outside of the power of suggestion. Example: In drug trials, test patients may be given a pill containing the drug or a placebo, which resembles the drug (pill, injection, liquid) but doesnt contain the active ingredient. Population: the entire group the researcher is studying. If the researcher cannot gather data from the population, studying large random samples taken from the population may be used to estimate how the population would respond. Power: the ability to observe differences or avoid making Type 2 errors. Random or Randomness: selected or performed without following any pattern or method. To avoid unintentional bias, researchers often use random number generators or flip coins  to make selections. (learn more) Results: the explanation or interpretation of experimental data. Statistical Significance: observation, based on the application of a statistical test, that a relationship probably is not due to pure chance. The probability is stated (e.g., p 0.05) and the results are said to be statistically significant. Simple Experiment: basic experiment designed to assess whether there are a cause and effect relationship or test a prediction. A fundamental simple experiment may have only one test subject, compared with a controlled experiment, which has at least two groups. Single-blind: when either the experimenter or subject is unaware whether the subject is getting the treatment or a placebo. Blinding the researcher helps prevent bias when the results are analyzed. Blinding the subject prevents the participant from having a biased reaction. T-test: common statistical data analysis applied to experimental data to test a hypothesis. The t-test computes the ratio between the difference between the group means and the standard error of the difference (a measure of the likelihood the group means could differ purely by chance). A rule of thumb is that the results are statistically significant if you observe a difference between the values that are three times larger than the standard error of the difference, but its best to look up the ratio required for significance on a t table. Type I Error (Type 1 error): occurs when you reject the null hypothesis, but it was actually true. If you perform the t-test and set p 0.05, there is less than a 5% chance you could make a Type I error by rejecting the hypothesis based on random fluctuations in the data. Type II Error (Type 2 error): occurs when you accept the null hypothesis, but it was actually false. The experimental conditions had an effect, but the researcher failed to find it statistically significant.
